    Details:

This software is for evaluation and testing purposes. The evaluation is available in ISO format. Web, Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter editions are available via the same download. You will be prompted for edition installation at setup. Evaluating any version of Windows Server 2008 R2 software does not require entering a product key, however will require activation within 10 days. Failing to activate the evaluation will cause the licensing service to shut the machine down every hour (The 10 day activation period can be reset five (5) times by using the rearm command. See below for further information on activation rearm). After this time, you will need to uninstall the evaluation software and reinstall a fully-licensed version of Windows Server 2008 R2.

How to manually rearm the 10 day activation grace period

When the initial 10-day activation period nears its end, you can run the Slmgr.vbs script to reset it back to 10 days. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Command Prompt.
    2. Type slmgr.vbs -dli, and then press ENTER to check the current status of your activation period.
    3. To reset the activation period, type slmgr.vbs –rearm, and then press ENTER.
    4. Restart the computer.

    Editions

Compared to its predecessor, most editions of Windows Server 2008 are available in x86-64 and IA-32 versions. These editions come in two DVDs: One for installing the IA-32 variant and the other for x64. Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems supports IA-64 processors. Microsoft has optimized the IA-64 version for high-workload scenarios like database servers and Line of Business (LOB) applications. As such, it is not optimized for use as a file server or media server. Microsoft has announced that Windows Server 2008 is the last 32-bit Windows server operating system.[28] Editions of Windows Server 2008 include:

    Windows Server 2008 Standard (IA-32 and x86-64)
    Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (IA-32 and x86-64)
    Windows Server 2008 Datacenter (IA-32 and x86-64)
Windows HPC Server 2008 (Codenamed "Socrates") (replacing Windows Compute Cluster Server)
    Windows Web Server 2008 (IA-32 and x86-64)
Windows Storage Server 2008 (Codenamed "Magni") (IA-32 and x86-64)
Windows Small Business Server 2008 (Codenamed "Cougar") (x86-64) for small businesses
Windows Essential Business Server 2008 (Codenamed "Centro") (x86-64) for medium-sized businesses
Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems
Windows Server 2008 Foundation (Codenamed "Lima") (x86-64) for OEMs only

The Microsoft Imagine program, known as DreamSpark at the time, used to provide verified students with the 32-bit variant of Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition, but the version has since then been removed. However, they still provide the R2 release.

The Server Core feature is available in the Web, Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter editions.

    Windows Server 2008 System Requirements:

This software is intended for evaluation and deployment planning purposes only. If you plan to install the software on your primary computer, it is recommended that you back up your existing data prior to installation.

To use Windows Server 2008, you need:

    Component

    Requirement

    Processor

    • Minimum: 1 GHz (x86 processor) or 1.4 GHz (x64 processor)
    • Recommended: 2 GHz or faster

Note: An Intel Itanium 2 processor is required for Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems.

    Memory

    • Minimum: 512 MB RAM
    • Recommended: 2 GB RAM or greater
    • Maximum (32-bit systems): 4 GB (Standard) or 64 GB (Enterprise and Datacenter)
    • Maximum (64-bit systems): 32 GB (Standard) or 1 TB (Enterprise and Datacenter) or 2 TB (Itanium-Based Systems)

    Available Disk Space

    • Minimum: 10 GB
    • Recommended: 40 GB or greater

Note: Computers with more than 16 GB of RAM will require more disk space for paging, hibernation, and dump files.

    Drive

    DVD-ROM drive

    Display and Peripherals

    • Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution monitor
    • Keyboard
    • Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Actual requirements will vary based on your system configuration and the applications and features you choose to install. Processor performance is dependent upon not only the clock frequency of the processor, but the number of cores and the size of the processor cache. Disk space requirements for the system partition are approximate. Itanium-based and x64-based operating systems will vary from these disk size estimates. Additional available hard-disk space may be required if you are installing over a network. For more information, see the Windows Server product site.

    Installation and Activation

Evaluating Windows Server 2008 software does not require product activation or entering a product key. Any edition of Windows Server 2008 may be installed without activation and evaluated for an initial 60 days.

If you need more time to evaluate Windows Server 2008, the 60-day evaluation period may be reset (or re-armed) three times, extending the original 60-day evaluation period by up to 180 days for a total possible evaluation time of 240 days. After this time, you will need to uninstall the software or upgrade to a fully-licensed version of Windows Server 2008.

    Service Pack:

Microsoft occasionally releases service packs for its Windows operating systems to fix bugs and also add new features.

Because Windows Server 2008 is based on the Windows NT 6.0 Service Pack 1 kernel, the RTM release is considered to be Service Pack 1; accordingly, the first service pack is called Service Pack 2. Announced on October 24, 2008, this service pack contains the same changes and improvements as the Windows Vista Service Pack 2, as well as the final release of Hyper-V 1.0, and an approximate 10% reduction in power usage.

The first SP2 beta build was sent out in October 2008, a public beta arrived in December 2008, and an RC-escrow build was given to testers in January 2009. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 share a single service pack binary, reflecting the fact that their code bases were joined with the release of Server 2008. On May 26, 2009, Service Pack 2 was ready for release. It is now available in Windows Update.
