    Silicon carbide is a crystalline compound of silicon and carbon by synthetic production. It has long been used as an important material for grinding wheels and cutting tools for its exceeding hardness. More recently, it has a wide application in wear-resistant components for pumps, automobiles, plant machines and engineering, in refractory linings and heating elements for industrial furnaces, in thermal shock-resistant parts in rocket engines. Silicon carbide has the highest hardness among synthetic materials known, which Mohs hardness reaches rating of 9, close to that of diamond. Its high thermal conductivity, together with its high-temperature strength, low thermal expansion, and resistance to chemical reaction, makes silicon carbide valuable in the manufacture of high-temperature bricks and other refractories.


    The wear and corrosion properties of mechanical components are very important for plant machines because they have a great impact on cost-effectiveness of production. Plant machines or equipment that convey or process abrasive, acid or alkali substance have strict demands on corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance properties of mechanical components, such as ones used in the chemical, food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries.     It is also classed as a semiconductor, having an electrical conductivity between that of metals and insulating materials.
