How Does an LCD Work?

An LCD works by using a backlight and a matrix of liquid crystals. The basic components include:

• Backlight: Provides the light source, usually LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes).
• Polarizers: Light passes through polarizing filters that control the direction of light waves.
• Liquid Crystals: The liquid crystals twist and untwist in response to an electric current, controlling the passage of light.
• Color Filters: These filters combine the three primary colors (Red, Green, and Blue) to create full-color images.

When electric current is applied to the liquid crystals, they either block or allow the passage of light from the backlight, depending on their alignment. By adjusting the crystals' orientation at each pixel, the display can produce a wide range of colors and brightness.

Notices: The differences between HTN, STN, and VA LCD types?

HTN (High Twisted Nematic) LCD screens, nematic liquid crystal molecules are sandwiched between two transparent glasses, and the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules is deflected 100~140 degrees between the two layers of glass. The main features are similar to TN, but the viewing angle is wider than TN. Common applications are indoor furniture, medical equipment, etc.

STN (Super Twisted Nematic) LCD screens, the liquid crystal rotates 180~270 degrees in the LCD screen, the viewing angle is better, and there are generally gray films, yellow-green films, and blue films. Widely used in high-channel COB/COG, such as communication devices, etc.

VA (Vertical Alignment) LCD screens, black background, and color patterns, high contrast, can achieve a multi-color silk screen display effect, and have certain requirements for driving voltage. It is mostly used for segment COB and low-channel drive products.
